Pumpkin Spice Small Potatoes Next To Autumn Apples

Buckets of apples in an orchard

Ever since 2003 – when a certain Seattle-based coffee giant introduced the Pumpkin Spice Latte to the caffeinated public – September has marked the start of an annual pumpkin spice feeding frenzy.

While pumpkin spice – which is actually a mix of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove - gets Kardashian-level attention every fall, it’s apples and apple-related products that constitute a significantly larger market for retailers and consumers.

Only 37 percent of Americans will consume something pumpkin this year – roughly one in three – yet we each eat an average of more than 46 pounds of apple products annually. About 16 pounds of that is fresh apples.

And guess what - we’re knee deep in apple season.

Last year, TQL picked up apple products from over 4,000 locations in North America resulting in thousands of loads moved.

More than 2,500 varieties of apples grow in the United States, including about 100 produced commercially. The top apple-growing states are Washington, New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California and Virginia.

This week and next, Washington varieties like Granny Smith, Pinova, Red Rom, Cameo, Sun Rose, Pink Lady, Jonagold and Fuji will be ready for harvest.

And we’ll be there to help get them to you.
