How a Millennial Workforce Owns National Volunteer Week

Cincinnati (OH) – In true millennial fashion, this new generation of workers is leading the charge for employers to do more when it comes to social philanthropy. At Total Quality Logistics (TQL) its workforce has turned National Volunteer Week into one of the company’s most successful employee engagement initiatives of the year.

TQL, a freight brokerage firm headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio with 59 offices across the country, will celebrate National Volunteer Week 2018, by participating in more than 60 volunteer projects.

TQL is expanding the celebration from one week to two, April 14 to 29, to allow teams more time to give back. Employees choose their team volunteer projects and a local charity captain helps coordinate whatever activity they would like to do. The teams also earn $250 for each non-profit served.

Volunteer Grants Open to the Public
TQL is opening its successful team volunteer grants to those outside the company. Anyone who participates in a volunteer activity and submits it to www.tql.com between April 14 to 29 will be eligible for a chance to win a grant from TQL. The company will randomly select 40 winners, 20 per week, to receive a $50 charity gift card, which can be donated to any 501(c)3 charity the winner chooses through the TQL giving platform.

“This is an opportunity to support both our employee’s personal philanthropic choices and those of everyone in the communities we serve,” says Kerry Byrne, President, TQL.

Last year, more than 600 TQL employees, family members and friends, participated in 53 volunteer events during National Volunteer Week, served more than 1,200 hours and earned more than $11,500 in team volunteer grants for various non-profit organizations.

Sharing the Secrets to Success
The company’s success in engaging its employees, more than 80 percent of whom are millennials, also is now documented and publicly available for anyone to use and share in a white paper titled, The Logistics of Corporate Giving, Six Proven Strategies to Strengthen Millennial and Gen Z Engagement

“We have seen a 75 percent participation rate in our annual giving campaign from 2016 to 2017. We have had a 64 percent increase in employee volunteering. Our employee survey scores have put us on Fortune’s 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials three years in a row. We are very pleased to have seen the correlation between giving and engagement first-hand.

“We hope others will look for ways to apply these strategies and amplify our collective impact on the communities where we live and work,” says Byrne.

National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration in April celebrating volunteerism. It occurs across the country and was originally conceived to recognize and say thank you to volunteers who lend their time and talents to community organizations.
